I got this answer from Trevor, back in our newscast #1, I will use the CEP sites example for a profitshare since are the ones that basically start the concept and so far still paying, here is what CEP calls the 3 key elements for a profitshare site to survive:
For a profit share site to survive and prosper, it needs 3 very important things. First, the Admin really need an understanding of how the profit share system works. Most of the new profit share sites are being run incorrectly. They (the admin) have to leave greed at the door, and be willing to put into the company rather than pull out from it. With the CEP sites, a lot is put back into the company. This concept of putting back into the company is extremely important, especially during the slow times. Admin that put money back into the company are helping the site remain stable and are giving it a huge shot at longevity. The old saying, it takes money to make money comes into play here.

That brings us to the second important thing; outside sources of income. Plain and simple, without an outside source of income, there is no real chance of sustainability. A substantial outside income stream is definably better to have, but even smaller streams are beneficial to the sites success. If a profit share site is solely dependant upon inside advertising revenue, it will come to a point where it will have to dip into the reserve to maintain their percentages, or at the worst, they will run out of money to pay what they owe their members.

The third most important thing a successful profit share site must have is a loyal membership base. Without this, there is no success on the horizon for a PS site. Members tend to flee when the percent drops a point. Either because they are not reassured by the Admin or they themselves don’t fully understand the PS model, they pull up stakes and literally walk away from a potential good thing. A loyal membership base will stick with the programs during the slow times, and reap the rewards for their loyalty.

It is a combination of these three key elements that makes a successful profit share site. If any of the three are missing, the site will struggle, and will likely fail. There are more things for sure, that will aide in a successful PS site, but these 3 are the big ones. The key elements, if you will
This would be for a profitshare, but off course the also new "Hybrid" concept that we can see at EliteAdShare is also very interesting.

Sure hope you can put together and interesting article again. :)
